Resolving Tractor Starting Issues (Part 2)

In the continuation of our exploration into why your tractor might not start, we delve into an often-overlooked culprit: air in the fuel system. If you missed the first part, we covered essential troubleshooting tips addressing the ignition switch, battery, and starter.

Diesel tractors are particularly challenging to restart once air has infiltrated their fuel lines. This scenario often occurs when the fuel tank is completely depleted. To avoid this situation during extended tasks, it's advisable to keep a close eye on fuel levels and refill as necessary, rather than risk running out.

Clearing Air from the Fuel Lines of Your Diesel Tractor

When air infiltrates the fuel system, the pressure needed to open the injectors for diesel spraying during combustion diminishes. To return your tractor to working order, the air must be purged, a process that can be both challenging and lengthy. Being vigilant about fuel levels and having a flashlight on hand for tank checks can prevent these issues.

If you find yourself with air in the system, start by filling the tank with diesel. The additional weight from the fuel will aid in pushing the air out as you attempt to prime the system. Next, locate the bleeder bolt on the injection pump. While its placement may vary depending on your pump model, it is generally a small, flat-headed screw that can be loosened to expel air. Once you observe steady fuel flow without bubbles from the bleed bolt, securely fasten it again.

Removing Air from Fuel System Lines

Next, focus on the hard lines that connect to the injector. Loosen these lines at their compression fittings slightly, and crank the engine in neutral, employing ten-second intervals until clear fuel flows from the loosened connections. After this, tighten the lines back up; the engine should now start.

Successfully purging the air will enable the engine to run again. Don’t be surprised if you see some white smoke on restart; this is normal for diesel engines. Keep in mind that while the procedure seems simple, it may prove more difficult than anticipated, so always have a diesel can handy.

Diesel Engine & Genset

YTO is an established ISO-certified manufacturer of diesel engines in China, offering over 60 different types specifically designed for tractors and construction machinery.

With more than 50 years of expertise, YTO delivers an extensive array of diesel engines and related parts for customer convenience.

Our diesel engines leverage compression heat to ignite fuels, eliminating the need for an electric ignition system and enhancing reliability. In comparison to gasoline engines, diesel engines generate higher power outputs while consuming less fuel and creating reduced exhaust waste heat, making them a global favorite among customers.

Here are some methods to help users lower fuel expenses:

  • Utilizing a fuel-saving, smoke-reduction device can decrease environmental impact while saving up to 5% on fuel costs.
  • Incorporating an inertia supercharger can enhance diesel engine power by 15% and curtail fuel consumption by 3% to 5%.
  • Wrapping the fuel filter with 2-3 layers of absorbent paper can increase fuel cleanliness and further reduce usage.
  • Including a layer of 8-20mm foam plastic between two filter screens improves filtration efficiency, ensuring complete fuel combustion and reducing consumption.
  • Connecting the oil return pipe to the high-pressure circuit can redirect return oil into the low-pressure circuit, significantly saving fuel without disrupting normal combustion.

In addition to our diesel engines, we also manufacture various products, including crawler tractors, combine harvesters, and wheel loaders, all certified by CE, E-mark, and CCC for assured quality.

YTO maintains numerous overseas offices, branches, assembly plants, and spare parts centers across Asia, Africa, America, and Europe. This extensive network makes it easier for clients to find spare parts and acquire our agricultural and construction machinery.
