What are the Four Types of Stainless Steel Sheets?

The term 'stainless steel' refers to a variety of iron-based alloys, each containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium. The specific properties of these stainless steels can vary greatly based on the quantity of chromium used and the addition of other elements such as molybdenum, nickel, and carbon. These variations lead to different types of stainless steel, each tailored for specific applications.

HWHG stainless steel sheets are globally exported across various industries, with a commitment to quality. Our mission is to ensure our customers receive high-value products that meet their needs. Together, we can forge a brighter future.

Stainless steel can generally be classified into four distinct categories:

  1. Austenitic: This is the most prevalent category of stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steels typically have high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nickel, making them versatile with excellent strength and malleability.
  2. Ferritic: Ferritic stainless steels contain between 10.5% and 30% chromium and have low carbon content not exceeding 0.1%. These steels are magnetic and are chosen for their resistance to oxidation and stress corrosion cracking.
  3. Duplex: Combining qualities of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, duplex stainless steel offers higher strength leading to significant weight savings. It is particularly valued for its resistance to corrosion in harsh environments, making it ideal for marine applications.
  4. Martensitic: Similar to ferritic stainless steels but with a higher carbon content (up to 1.2%), martensitic stainless steels can be hardened significantly. They are commonly used for medical tools and surgical instruments.
