Supercharger Ceramic Washers | Sea-Doo Forum

I have a GTX Supercharged Seadoo, I have been doing some reading on replacing the superchargers ceramic washers with metal washers. I have approximately 40 hours on the machine. Is this something I need to do , if so, is it something I should let the dealer do or can I do this myself. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, although I have never worked on a seadoo. You could more than likely do it youself.
If you want you could join as a "premium member". As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and privet use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps, carburetor rebuilds and impeller wear ring tolerances. I read somewhere back when, that the best oil to use with the supercharged 4-TEC engines was AMSOIL. I've spoken with one of their reps about the type oil to use and they recommend they (WCF) 10w-40w Full Synthetic brand oil. http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/wcf.aspx

The article I read (I wish I would have kept) had to do with the problems with the ceramic washers and oil type. They found that a lot of the problems with the ceramic washers had to do with the oil being used. If I remember right, it was caused by PWC owners using the mineral oil brand of oil instead of the synthetic brand.....but no matter. You could probably ask 25 Seadoo repair shops and they'd all have a different answer.

Upgrading to the metal washers will ensure that you don't blow out the charger........so, it may be worth the work. Reading the chapter in disassembly, the model 4-TEC, doesn't seem like it's that hard. I've not done it personally, but the manual illustrates it and describes the procedures pretty well.

There are a few special tools to purchase. You'll also have to replace the roller bearings so make sure you read the chapter throuoghly and be sure you can comprehend the procedure. This thing spins up to 45,000 rpm...so attention to detail will be paramount to a successful repair.

I went back through my reading and found that the biggest problems in the ceramic washers to be operators using synthetic oils. The synthetic oils and the ceramic washers are not compatible.

The operators manual for the , super charged 4-TEC says to use the mineral oil XP-S 10w-40w oil, part number 219-700-346. This oil has been tested thoroughly for additives that are compatible with the slip ceramic washers for the standard SC and the SCIC (intercooled)

I had to go back over my research on this because it was so long ago that this topic was brought up, ......but do change out the ceramic washers the first chance you get. They have been known to be troublesome. But, in the meantime, if your using the synthetic blend oil, change to the mineral blend. A complete and throuogh change of oil and filter.

So, now, I stand corrected Karl........(yeah, he has a memory like a hawk looking for food....I had forgot all about it...he didnt'!. :rofl I appreciate the information on the type of oil to use. I will plan on changeing the oil this weekend. With only 40 hours on this machine do you think it would be ok to run this season with the ceramic washers after I change the oil, or should I go ahead and change out the washers. The local seadoo dealer here in Texas did not seem concerned about the ceramic washers he told me he had only replaced one set and that was because the owner wanted them changed out. He said he would do it for me if I brought him the supercharger and the washers for $150.00 he said he could not supply the washers. Do you know which type would be best. I have seen a couple diffrent types one was stainless the other was a titanium coated steel.
