Tips and Tricks for Gabion Walls

Small or large baskets?

Gabion walls have become increasingly popular due to their flexibility, ease of construction, and aesthetic appeal. According to online sources, using gabion baskets can provide excellent drainage, support landscaping, and create custom structures for various applications.

There are a number of challenges when using large gabions. Here's some considerations:

Smaller gabion baskets are more manoeuvrable

Most gabion baskets are delivered flat-packed on a wooden pallet. The construction takes place on-site when they're ready to be filled. It's not practical to fill a fully constructed basket with rock and try to move it; it will become too heavy and unwieldy. Instead, installers should take the steel mesh pieces from the pallet and erect them into position as part of the retaining wall.

To find out what you get with your gabion basket flatpack:

Considering the logistics, handling smaller steel mesh sheets (e.g., 500mm x mm) is far more manageable by one person compared to larger sheets. A gabion assembly composed of panels that are 500mm x mm is about the largest size manageable by a single installer. For larger panels, additional help is necessary (at least 2 people). Refer to the demo video to see an example of a 500mm x 500mm basket being assembled.

Smaller gabions are easier to fill

With smaller gabion baskets, or when constructing a larger wall using smaller sections, installation becomes much simpler since you can easily reach the bottom for rock placement. Trying to fill a 1m high basket can be quite frustrating, especially when using a wheelbarrow.

For baskets situated on the ground, simply wheelbarrow your rock filling directly into the top of the basket before attaching the lid mesh. This method eliminates the need for loaders or bobcats to scoop and fill from a strenuous height.

Increased customization

For example, consider building a 2m long gabion rock wall that is 300mm deep and 500mm high. Instead of using one large basket, a combination of standard panel sizes can be utilized:

  • 4 off x 500mm panels for the front and back
  • 4 off x 300mm panels for the top and bottom
  • 3 off 500mm x 300mm panels for the end panels (2 ends and a center)

This allows for construction one panel at a time instead of attempting to handle a massive 2m basket. The central panel provides a cost-effective solution, negating the need for two separate baskets, while securely tying everything together with spiral winders.

By stacking smaller gabion baskets, you can include a horizontal center support within your retaining wall. This design helps maintain consistent rock filling in the basket and prevents bulging over time. Larger baskets carry a greater risk of bulging because they lack adequate wire mesh support. Ultimately, this can compromise the structure and aesthetics of your wall.
