When it comes to choosing a monitor, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. This intro to my 20-point monitor checklist buying guide will help you choose the best display for your needs.
First, you need to decide what size monitor you need, then lose sleep over the resolution.
Then cry about all the additional features you want (like a milk frothing port for late-night latte preparation).
Finally, you need to sell your Lambogini to pay for the thing, for that’s what’s important — right?

When it comes to buying a new monitor, it can be a daunting task.
Do you buy the biggest one?
The cheapest one?
What about the color of the power cable?
Will it float in the bathtub?
Can I take it for walks?
There are so many monitors to choose from as you scan Amazon, Best Buy, PC World, and whatever other online computer emporium wanders across your browser space.
This monitor buying guide will help iron out some of these issues, answer a few questions that you never thought you needed answers for, and cause you to be armed with such advanced esoteric knowledge, of which monitor is ideal for your specifications, that you will be the go-to-girl/guy in all things monitorish.
Picking out a monitor is a lot like dating: You want to make sure you don’t end up with an awful model that leaves you unsatisfied; you’ll spend a lot of time in close eye contact, so you want one that looks good up close; and if you don’t have a good connection, maybe it might be time to move on and forget the whole thing.
Five Deep Philosophical Questions
Here are at least five key questions to consider when beginning to think about your future display needs:
- What Resolution Do I Need? The resolution of your monitor will affect the clarity and sharpness of the images on your screen. A higher resolution will provide better image quality but may require a more powerful graphics card to run properly.
- What Size Do I Need? The size of your monitor will dictate how much desktop real estate you have to work with. If you have limited space, consider a smaller monitor. Conversely, if you have plenty of space, you may want to go with a larger monitor for increased productivity. You’ll never regret a large screen!
- What Type of Refresh Rate Is the Best? The refresh rate of your monitor determines how often the image on your screen is updated. You’ve probably never asked yourself this when considering what type of monitor you’re buying, but it is closely related to the next point: the use case.
- What Is My Use Case? Most monitors today are fine with regard to their display quality. Most of them come with a variety of features, such as high resolution, adjustable brightness, and descent connectivity. They also offer wide viewing angles so that you can see images clearly from all sides.
- Additionally, some come with built-in speakers, allowing you to have an integrated audio experience as well. But it is helpful to determine from the outset what you will use your new monitor for: usually, it will tumble into one of these main categories: gaming, general use, or multimedia and professional.
- What about the Price? Knowing how much you can afford will help narrow down your options and ensure you get the best value for your money. Saving for an extra month or two to get what you really need may be a good strategy. Not eating a dozen donuts at 8 am may help grow the pennies.
- Generally speaking, a good budget range for monitors starts at around US$200-$300 and goes up depending on certain features and sizes. Sure, you can go cheaper, but this would be my recommended starting point to at least get something of average quality.

What’s Good About the OLED Display? Differences Between LCD, LED, and OLED
When comparing an LCD or LED (both work by the same principle, but using a different type of light) screen to an OLED display, you will notice a couple of advantages of the last.
First of all, the colors on the OLED display are just popping out of the screen! With full range of colors displayed, you will enjoy true-to-life colors. OLED screens are capable of displaying over 60 times more colors than most LCD laptop displays (1.07 billion VS 16.7 million). Color gamut coverage is also much more impressive, with 100% DCI-P3 coverage (compared to 62.5% on most LCD laptop screens).
One color you will notice especially is black. This is due to a different technology being utilized here. LCD screens use backlight to "shine" onto other layers, which creates an unwanted "aura". This relates to some pixels that aren’t supposed to be lit up receiving some light as well. It often causes the black levels on LED & LCD screens to look "somewhat black" or dark-gray-ish.
In comparison, when black color is displayed on an OLED display, the pixels where the black appears are simply turned off until needed, providing you with true black color and amazing 1:1,000,000 contrast.
OLEDs also provide much better color performance at low brightness levels, as pixels do not depend on the backlight. When you decrease the brightness on an LCD screen, you are basically lowering the amount of light that will be reaching the pixels. In the meantime, OLED pixels will be producing their own light to display the colors ─ just not as bright, but still accurate.
While blacks are darker, the whites are brighter! OLEDs are capable of producing up to 600 nits of brightness, while most laptop LCD screens can produce up to 250 nits.
But it’s not only about how well things are displayed. It’s about the whole experience. OLED screens provide wide viewing angles, which allows you to show the screen content to multiple people at once. On other types of screens, viewing from angles that aren’t almost completely straight to the surface can result in an unclear image with lots of reflections.
Finally, thanks to the organic compounds used in the OLED displays, you will be exposed to up to 70% less harmful blue light than most laptop LCD screens. Blue light is often cited as one of the main causes of eye strain , which can lead to the degradation of your vision. Ever catch yourself rubbing your eyes after a long session in front of your laptop? Good chance that the blue light is the culprit!
