Drug Discovery and Development Process

The journey towards a new medication starts with its discovery phase. This pivotal step involves researchers conducting an extensive evaluation of various compounds to identify potential candidates that may develop into effective medical treatments.

This process initiates with pinpointing a novel target molecule - typically a protein or another molecular entity that plays a critical role in a particular disease. Following the identification of this target, scientists embark on the task of designing and synthesizing new compounds that can effectively engage with the target molecule, thereby altering or inhibiting its function.

Researchers employ a variety of strategies during the discovery phase to seek out and assess prospective treatments, which include:

  • Conducting tests on a multitude of molecular compounds to ascertain if any exhibit beneficial properties against diseases
  • Re-evaluating existing medications for their potential benefits against different ailments
  • Leveraging newly acquired insights into diseases to conceive products capable of halting or even reversing the progression of a disease
  • Implementing innovative technologies for disease treatment, particularly those that allow for precision targeting within the body or the alteration of genetic material

Throughout the discovery phase, researchers can sift through thousands of unique compounds to unearth suitable candidates for therapeutic development. Generally, only a select few of these compounds emerge as promising candidates warranting additional examination. According to the Pharmaceutical Journal, a respected research publication from the United Kingdom, out of every 10,000 compounds evaluated during the discovery phase, merely 10 to 20 advance to the development phase. Furthermore, approximately half of those that enter development eventually make their way to preclinical trials.
