Applications

Wire rod has a number of end uses and applications, including tie wire, mesh, fencing, shelving, shopping carts, wire hangers and nails. In addition, wire drawn from rod can be galvanized, plated and painted.

CMC Steel can produce wire rod to meet our customers’ needs with technical service support available to match customer requirements with our production process options. Our commitment to quality provides assurance that our customers’ requirements will be successfully met with the highest quality products and superior customer service.

What is Steel Wire Rod?

Wire rod is a rolled steel product (alloy or non-alloy), manufactured from semi-finished steel with a rectangular, rounded, hexagonal or squared shape. Especially, fine cross-sections are reached by sequent cold drawing. Wire rod is wrapped around into the coils and also carried in this form.

Wire Rod Usage

Steel wire rods can be used for a wide range of products depending on how it is shaped and treated. The main usage is in the manufacturing of:

  1. wire mesh,
  2. nails
  3. springs
  4. reinforcement wire
  5. barbed wire
  6. wire ropes
  7. welded wire mesh.

Wire Rod Shape and Size

The steel wire rod is a finished product and is cold-formed for farther processing. Although it has a variety of shapes, it is mostly rolled round. Diameters often range from 5 to 15 millimeters, with most comply with the ISO standards, makes it easy for the sizes to advance in increments of 1 mm to 20 mm.

All steel wire rods are formed into the coils without any break. This is to ensure that steel wire rods are well-prepared for farther processing (usually by heat treating, coating, and cleaning). The coils’ internal diameter often varies from 810 to 910 millimeters, and the external, from 1100 to 1300 millimeters (depends on the capability of mill’s equipment). Subsequently, the weight of the coils differs from approximately 600 kg and larger above 2 tons.

Wire Rod Properties and grades

According to the type of material, Steel wire rods are manufactured in different grades.

Carbon steel wire rod is the most common with no minimum content specified or required of molybdenum (Mo), aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), niobium (Nb), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), tungsten (W), titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), vanadium (V), or any other element required for a particular effect of alloying. Carbon steel wire rods contain copper content, generally up to 0.40%. Moreover, the manganese content will not exceed the level of 1.65% and 0.60% will be the maximum level of silicon.

These steel wire rods are supplied in the following grades:

  1. Low Carbon:

    • with C content ≤ 0.15 %. This is also known for “mild steel” or “electrode steel”.
  1. Medium Carbon:

    • Low grade; includes 0.15% < carbon content ≤ 0.23%
    • High grades; includes 0.23% < carbon content ≤ 0.44%.
  1. High Carbon:

    • includes C content > 0.44 %.

Besides the grades, there are other features to be guaranteed for carbon steel wire rods while going through the various processes to be with no defects as well as have the right performance according to the destined application.
