Two principal types of matrix materials are used: thermoplastic and thermosetting, which have distinct characteristics beneficial for different applications.

- Thermoplastics: These materials can be repeatedly softened by heat for molding and retain their shape upon cooling. They feature molecular structures that can lead to significant melting points at high temperatures.
- Thermosetting: In contrast, thermosetting materials undergo irreversible chemical bonding, or curing, during their transition from liquid to solid state, rendering them unable to remelt.

Fiber-reinforced polymer composites harness various fiber types for reinforcement, with the selection often influenced by the intended application. Common fibers include glass, carbon, aramid, and even natural fibers.
